What to do on the Gold Coast this winter
The winter months bring some of the most glorious days to the Gold Coast; with clear skies, glistening beaches, balmy (mid 20s) temperatures and spectacular sunrise/sunsets.
If you are looking to shed the winter layers and extend the memory of summer, a Gold Coast winter holiday is certainly for you!
Here are Xanadu Main Beach’s top picks for winter activities during your stay.
Take in the sights at sunrise
A winter sunrise on the Gold Coast takes place at the very respectable hour of about 6.30am. Start your day under the pastel hues with a relaxing beach walk or yoga session, grab a refreshing morning dip or, for those who are feeling energetic, climb the magnificent Mount Warning. This distinct mountain is nestled in the hinterland – a little over an hour from Xanadu Main Beach – and is popular at this time of day with adventurers seeking the beautiful 360 degree views as a reward for their efforts.
Spot a whale (or several)
South East Queensland oceans are a whale’s playground during the cooler months, as these majestic creatures make the journey north. A number of whale watching tours depart from the Gold Coast shores daily during the season, or you can “do it yourself” as you enjoy one of the many local esplanade walks.
Get the creative juices flowing with a group craft session at The Craft Parlour in Palm Beach! With upcoming lessons in macramé, basket weaving, block printing, screen printing, floral arrangement, resin art and paper making, there is something on offer for every interest and talent!
The Craft Parlour is at 1059 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach – just a short drive from Xanadu Main Beach.
Get your head in the clouds (almost)
Some 230 metres above the sea, atop the iconic Q1 building (one of the tallest residential towers in the world), SkyPoint’s observation deck offers 360 degree views of all the makes the Gold Coast so special ... from the surf to the hinterland and beyond.
Your visit will also include a ride in one of the world's fastest elevators … taking you from ground floor to level 72 in just 42.7 seconds!
Embrace the chill
If the balmy winter daytime temperatures have you longing for a hint of the cold, then head to Gold Coast Iceland and slip on some ice skates.
This purpose-built centre offers open sessions, learn to skate lessons and even ice hockey.
Be sure to wear your winter woollies and prepare for plenty of laughs!
Iceland is located at 15 Strathaird Road, Bundall – about 15 minutes’ drive from your Main Beach accommodation.
Tambourine Rainforest Skywalk
Get a unique perspective of the hinterland as you meander through the rainforest canopies – some 40 metres about the ground!
The Tambourine Rainforest Skywalk is a family-friendly 1.5 km platform trail that weaves through the upper canopy of Mt. Tambourine over forest floor, creeks and an abundance of local wildlife.
Roast your own
Return home from your Gold Coast winter holiday with sun-kissed skin AND some new skills!
There is simply nothing more tempting in the cooler months than a warm, well-made coffee, so learn to brew your own.
The Gold Coast Coffee School offers a six hour beginners course, and covers barista initiation, latte art and one hour of free practice.
Browse a farmers market
Take your pick of the Gold Coast’s finest produce and whip up a wholesome meal in the comfort of your Xanadu Main Beach kitchen.
Each Saturday from 7am to noon, Marina Mirage hosts a Farmers Market at 74 Seaworld Drive (just a short walk from your accommodation) … we guarantee you won’t leave hungry or empty handed!
Take a hike up Mount Mitchell
Lush rainforest and dry shrub combine on this volcanic mountain climb, which extends out of Main Range National Park.
Pack you picnic and your family for a day of adventure. The summit stands at 1,000, above sea level but is relatively easy going and suitable for most.
Mount Mitchell is about a two hour drive west of the Gold Coast and you will enjoy some impressive scenery on your way there.
